ok so i was not going to post about this because i don't really like to
post things about what i do with the FD even more so when what
happens is off the clock so to speak. But here we go so today i got up
early and spent the day out rail fanning and everything was going great
since it was such a nice day i stayed out to catch Amtrak 30 at the
station in south bend well while i was getting my gear setup i noticed a
guy in a power chair crossing the tracks he ended up getting stuck on
the rails so i dropped my stuff and ran to help myself and another
person who vanished after helping got him off the tracks shortly before
a train came i stayed with this person in the power chair pushing him
towards my car since his battery died and i had a power inverter in my
car we got to the car and i hooked up the power i noticed he was
shivering so i gave him my jacket to wear while his chair charged i then
made the decision to radio SBFD for SBPD to come out to help this
person since he had to go almost 2 miles on his chair in the dark to get
home after awhile 3 police officers pulled up and i told them what was
going on and they ended up calling me a hero for getting this guy off
the tracks and for doing everything else i did for him after much
discussion about what we could do to get this guy home we decided
that we would load him into a squad car and have the street dept take
the chair to his house after more chatting the officers stated that they
were going to put me in for some sort of award by my self and as a
member of my fire unit. personally i don't really think i did all that much
and i don't consider my self a hero i just did what any decent person
would have done under the same circumstances.
